Walk to School 2018 is just around the corner. Join hundreds of schools across Victoria from Monday 8 October to Friday 2 November by getting your children's school registered. Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school.

Find out if your school has registered, and encourage your school to register if they are yet to do so. Schools that sign up will receive a $300 project voucher from us to help promote and celebrate the month. All registered schools will have access to classroom resources to help teachers get their classes involved. Each school may choose to do this differently.

A student, teacher or your school’s Walk to School champion will record how many times a student walks, rides or scoots to and from school during October, using a classroom calendar. Schools with the highest participation levels are eligible for some fantastic prizes. So every time a child walks, rides or scoots to and from school during October they increase your school’s chance of winning!

If your child’s school is not taking part in Walk to School, they can still participate by registering as an individual student. They will be able to track their walks, rides and scoots and contribute to the state-wide effort!

Walk to School is all about making active travel fun, easy, safe and accessible for Victorian primary school kids to help them build healthy habits for life and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical exercise per day.

Walking to school year-round is a great way for your child to:

  • Get to know their local area
  • Meet other children in their neighbourhood and at their school
  • Learn safety skills, like crossing the road
  • Gain confidence and the ability to travel independently as they get older.

It’s also a great way to connect with family members and your community. Active travel options to and from school provide more time for conversation and is less stressful than driving. Not to mention it helps the environment, reduces traffic congestion and demand for parking!

Exercise before school also has a positive impact in the classroom, as active children are more active learners.

Last year, more than 140,000 students took part and walked the equivalent of two return trips to the moon! Participating students have the chance to win great regional prizes

If you're child's school isn't participating, you can still get involved in creative competitions to win weekly prizes! Walk to School have designed templates for your kids to decorate and share by tagging Walk to School on Facebook and hash-tagging #walktoschool. The most creative designs could win some great prizes!
