How to Apply

Applicants are required to read through the information below and then complete an Expression of Interest application form through Smartygrants.

Submissions will be assessed on the following criteria:
• Innovative and engaging art forms and practice
• Works of high quality presented in a professional manner
• Works that fit within the limitations of the exhibition spaces (Carlton Library Light Box submissions - responsive to the site and/or format of the light boxes)
• All works proposed in submission must be available for exhibition
• Carlton Library Light Box submissions only: Photographic, digital or other works that demonstrate suitability to the Duratrans medium and the illuminated aesthetic and display

Richmond Town Hall, Richmond Library, Fitzroy Library and Bargoonga Nganjin Exhibitions

Richmond Town Hall, Richmond Library, Fitzroy Library and Bargoonga Nganjin Exhibitions are programmed for approximately 12 weeks duration. A fee is paid to successful applicants to contribute towards the exhibition development and presentation costs. Applicants may submit one exhibition proposal as part of the Application process for one of each of the four locations.

Richmond Town Hall
Richmond Town Hall, located at 333 Bridge Road, plays an important role in the delivery of services to the community. Members of our community attend the town hall for a variety of reasons including Council and community meetings, functions and on Council business.

The exhibition spaces at Richmond Town Hall are on the upper floor and consist of three meeting rooms with alcoves and a corridor. Two exhibitions will be selected for Richmond Town Hall for a duration of approximately 12 weeks each. Dates of exhibitions will be scheduled between February – April 2019 & November 2019 – January 2020, in consultation with the successful applicants.

A stipend of $1,200 will be paid towards each exhibition selected for the full space. Technical support towards the installation will be provided.

The exhibition spaces at Richmond Town Hall can be viewed during business hours Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm (ask for access at reception and please note the meeting rooms are only accessible when there are no meetings or other business taking place).

Richmond Library
Richmond Library is located at 415 Church Street Richmond. The Richmond Library exhibition space has a single section of wall for the display of artwork. Mediums considered for display are multiple framed works or customized paste up installations. 

Two exhibitions will be selected for Richmond Library to be held for a duration of approximately 12 weeks. Dates of exhibitions will be scheduled between May – July & August – October 2019. A fee of $400 will be provided for selected artists exhibiting at Richmond Library.

Arts & Cultural Services will coordinate the installation in conjunction with the artist.

Library spaces can be viewed during opening hours.

Fitzroy Library
Fitzroy Library is located at 128 Moor Street, Fitzroy. The Fitzroy Library exhibition space consists of 12 wall mounted glass cases in a busy corridor which leads to the library meeting rooms and staff offices. The cases are suitable for two dimensional works (particularly series of works), jewellery, small sculptural objects and historical exhibitions.

Three exhibitions will be selected for Fitzroy Library for a duration of 12 weeks each. Installation will be managed by the exhibiting individuals/groups unless requested otherwise (labelling will be covered in kind by Council) and access will be organised in coordination with Arts & Cultural Services and Yarra Libraries.

A stipend of $650 will be provided to each selected artist/group to support an exhibition. Exhibitions are available in May – July, August – October & November 2019 – January 2020.

Library spaces can be viewed during opening hours.

Bargoonga Nganjin
Bargoonga Nganjin is located at 182 St Georges Rd, North Fitzroy. It has a Library, Maternal and Child Heath Centre, community rooms and courtyard garden.

The Bargoonga Nganjin exhibition space consists of one curved wall in a busy area which leads to the children’s library, library meeting rooms, Access Yarra desk, staff offices. An optional addition to the wall are the two transparent wall cavity cases which are suitable for two dimensional works (particularly series of work), jewellery, small sculptural objects and historical exhibitions.

Four exhibitions will be selected for Bargoonga Nganjin for a duration of 12 weeks each. 

Installation will be managed by the exhibiting individuals/groups unless otherwise negotiated (exhibition labels will be covered in kind by Council) and access will be organised in coordination with Arts & Cultural Services and Yarra Libraries. A stipend of $1,000 will be provided to each selected artist/group to support an exhibition.
Library spaces can be viewed during opening hours.

Carlton Library Light Box Public Art Program

We are calling for artists to exhibit a series of four works at Carlton Library, as part of the Carlton Library Light Box Public Art Program. Carlton Library is located at 667 Rathdowne Street, North Carlton. The Light Box installation is located on the south wall of the library, along Newry Street near the junction of Rathdowne Street.

Two series of four works will be selected and exhibited for six months each in 2019.

Site Considerations
This is an opportunity to create a unique artistic statement on a busy, inner city street. Artists should be mindful of the key audience for the Light Boxes that includes users of the Carlton Library, local residents, pedestrians, nearby business patrons and commuters along Rathdowne Street.

Artwork Lifespan
Due to the nature of the materials and working with UV light in an outdoor environment, the selected artworks will be displayed on a rotation to ensure the lifespan of each print is maximised. By rotating the works, it is hoped the prints will last up to 15 years at least and will be displayed multiple times over this period. The artworks will be printed on photographic Duratrans.

Council will retain ownership of the works and they may be entered into Yarra’s Art Collection.

Artists Fee
Each selected artist will receive a fee of $2,000 (excluding GST). This fee is inclusive of all costs involved with the creation of the works including artist fee, production of digital files to specifications for printing, transport and administration etc.

Council will manage and cover the costs associated with printing the Duratrans and installation, however the artist will be required to liaise with the appointed supplier in regards to supplying files and overseeing test prints.
