Our children's librarians are here to introduce kids to some simple and delicious recipes.
Cheap, cheerful and healthy: have fun learning how to cook - make sure you have your adult with you!

Recipes

 

French Omelette

Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • ½ tablespoon of butter
  • salt and pepper to taste

Kitchen Utensils:

  • Stove top burner
  • Small non-stick pan
  • Whisk
  • Spatula

Dahl

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of red lentils
  • 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder
  • 1 litre stock (or water)
  • Sprig of curry leaves (or 20 loose curry leaves)
  • salt taste

Kitchen Utensils:

  • Stove top burner
  • Medium/large pot
  • Measuring cup(s)
  • Wooden Spoon

 

Yum Balls

Ingredients:

  • 250g plain sweet biscuits
  • 395g sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup desiccated coconut
  • 1½ cups desiccated coconut (for rolling)

Kitchen Utensils:

  • Food processor or rolling pin + sealable bag
  • Large bowl
  • Measuring cup(s)
  • Wooden Spoon
   

Pesto

Ingredients:

  • 1 bunch of basil
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 40g pine nuts
  • ½ - 1 cup of olive oil
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese (optional)

Kitchen Utensils:

  • Frying pan
  • Blender
  • Mixing bowl
   

Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium sized butternut pumpkin
  • 1 brown onion
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 1 litre of chicken stock
  • 3 sprigs of rosemary
  • 1 cup of cream

Kitchen Utensils:

  • Large roasting tray
  • Large pot
  • Blender/Stick blender
 Christmas cookies

Christmas cookies

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups self raising flour
  • 1-2 cups of sugar
  • 1 tin sweetened condensed milk
  • 500g butter 
  • 2 cups of icing sugar (icing)
  • 3-5 tablespoons milk (icing)

Kitchen Utensils:

  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Oven tray/cookie sheet
  • Measuring cup(s)
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • Wooden spoon
