How long can I keep library materials?
Books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, kits and talking books may be borrowed for three weeks at a time.
Items will be renewed automatically, up to three times each, unless they have been reserved by another member.
Red Hot Reads can only be borrowed for seven days and cannot be renewed.
Inter-Library Loans may be renewed upon request. Please contact us for more information.

How do I find the items I want?
You can find all items by searching the catalogue. You can find out which library has the item, and whether it is on the shelf or on loan.
You can also use the catalogue to
- order items to be sent to your local library for pick up
- review the status of items you have reserved
- renew your books
- see what you have borrowed from the library and when it is due

How long does it take for reserved items to arrive?
Items currently on-shelf should take no longer than a few days to arrive at another branch. This is assuming the item is not missing or damaged.
Items coming from a Libraries Victoria library location outside of the five Yarra branches can take a week or more to arrive.
You can check the status of your reserved item on your account, under the “Holds” section.

Where can I return library materials?
All materials belonging to us can be returned to any Yarra Libraries branch. There are after-hour chutes at all branches enabling you to return items at any time.
Items borrowed through Libraries Victoria can also be returned to any Yarra Libraries branch or participating Libraries Victoria library service, regardless of which library it was borrowed from.

You may have up to 20 reservations on your card at any one time. Reservations are free of charge.

How does the library contact me about reservations?
Email – if an email address is supplied, all notifications will be sent to your email.
SMS – if an email address is not supplied, but you have a mobile phone number, an SMS will be sent to your mobile phone. This is a free service.
Phone – if an email address is not supplied, and you have not given us a mobile phone number, a telemessaging service will deliver a message to your home phone advising that there is something waiting for pickup. Unfortunately the service cannot specify the item.
Mail – in cases where neither an email address nor mobile or home phone number is given, a notice will be sent in the mail. A mail message will also be sent if the phone message has not been delivered successfully.

What if the library doesn't have the item I want?
We welcome suggestions for items that are not already in the collection. You can make your recommendation online or at the library desk.
Your Yarra Libraries library card can also be used to borrow items, request holds for pickup and pay outstanding bills at any public library branch that is part of the Libraries Victoria network. Find out more about Libraries Victoria.

Does the library accept donations?
We are unable to accept the donation of items to be added into our collection, but may accept goods that are deemed suitable for resale at our pre-loved book sales.
Due to limited space, we may not be able to accept large quantities of donations, and will not accept magazines, encyclopedic volumes or AV items.

Some spaces are bookable, others are provided one a first-come, first-served basis.

Do librarians supervise exams?
Sorry, we are unable to supervise students undertaking exams. Can I eat or drink in the library?
Yes, you are welcome to eat and drink provided that you do not disturb other members, and clean up after yourself.

Who can join the library?
Membership of Yarra Libraries is free. Any individual, regardless of where they reside, may apply to become a member by visiting one of our five branches or applying online. We offer different membership types depending on your circumstances.

What should I do if I lose my card?
Report the loss as soon as possible. We will stop the card from being used and issue you with a new one. Fees may apply.
