Joining Yarra Libraries is free and open to residents of Victoria. You can sign up for a library card online, or at our branches in Collingwood, Richmond, Carlton, Fitzroy and North Fitzroy.
Become a member
Joining at our branches
You can become a member by filling out out a membership form at any Yarra Libraries branch. Adults must show proof of current address and agree to abide by the policies of Yarra Libraries. You will be required to present some form of identification showing your name and current address, such as a driver's licence, pension card or utilities bill. You will then be able to borrow immediately.
You can also join Yarra Libraries online. This will give you a temporary user number which will expire in 3 months.
You will be given a temporary user number which allows you to reserve books and other items by placing holds on the City of Yarra Libraries catalogue.
You will also be able to use the temporary user number to access some of our online resources: The Computer School, Bolinda eBooks and eAudiobooks, PressReader and Freegal Music streaming and downloads.
To borrow physical items from one of our branches, you will need a permanent library card.
To receive your permanent library card, you must visit your local library and show library staff your current formal identification. You will also need to accept Yarra Libraries' membership conditions.
If under the age of 18, a parent or guardian's signature will be required.
An Organisational Membership allows you to create a single membership card for your institution, which allows your staff to borrow in bulk and to access our online resources.
Acceptable forms of identification include:
- Driver licence or learner permit
- Other forms of official licence
- Concession card
- Student card with address on it
- Health care card
- Official rent/lease agreement
- Electricity/water/gas/phone bills
- Official communications from any bank or financial institution

- If you are under 18, we require a parent or guardian to come with you on your first visit to the library.
